Purpose of Youth Work with young people is to provide personal and social developments in their transition from childhood to responsible adulthood, encourage their social development and individual fulfilment, and help them engage fully in society. Young people are our partners in learning and in decision making.

Principles of Youth Work

Youth work is built upon four principles which guide the interaction between youth workers and young people. These are that youth work is : Educative, Participative, Empowering and Equality promoting. This is ensured through an active Youth Work Curriculum

Youth work is delivered through trained youth workers engaging three broad approaches: Youth Centres (30 "maintained by WCC and many voluntary groups), detached work taking place where young people naturally meet and project work with other organisations and partners. Project work is often with specific targetted groups of young people and an be through personal development programmes using outdoor education, arts or sports etc. All work bases will signpost young people to appropriate agencies or specialist support or advice.

Involving Young People: The service oversees the development of opportunities for young people to have a real say in decision making on matters that affect them. This is achieved through very local opportunities through youth centres and projects and also the area and county forum.
