Nursery Assistant

Qualifications are not always required.  Many nurseries will offer training and some will expect a commitment to gaining NVQ level 2.

You would usually work as part of a team meeting the daily needs of children. You would usually be supervised by a nursery nurse or an early years practitioner.

Nursery Nurse or Early Years Practitioner

You will be qualified up to NVQ Level 3 and will work as a key worker responsible for the daily needs of the children in your care. You may be supported in your role by a nursery assistant.

Team Leader/ Deputy

You will be qualified to NVQ Level 3 and assist the manager in his or her role helping with staffing and curriculum planning and deputising in their absence. You may be responsible for a team of staff and specialise in baby or pre-school care.

Manager or Officer in Charge

You will be qualified to NVQ Level 3 with post qualifying experience and will be responsible for the day to day running of the nursery. You will be supervising and supporting staff and responsible for administration. You will also be responsible for ensuring that the nursery meets all the legal requirements of registration and inspecton under OFSTED

Playworker

Play workers are usually employed in Out of School Clubs working with school age children. The club leader will be expected to be qualified to level 3 and assistants will have some relevant experience with this age group. Playworkers are often recruited from college students seeking holiday employment. Some may combine this work with employment in playgroups or local schools.

Early Years Teacher

A qualified teacher with an early years specialism may be employed in the nursery to assist with the delivery of early years education to 3-5 year olds. This is often a part time position and sometimes attracts teachers who are retiring from the maintained sector.
